Our tour guide was amazing. Not only we saw jaguars with him, he also was full of knowledge about other animals. The stuff overall was very attentive and rooms were excellent. Reservation was easy and they even connected us to a great company for transfer from the airport. We enjoyed the adventure and it was a highlight of our trip to Brazil. Unfortunately our Oncafari driver managed to run over speed bump at very high speed and one of our party was injured. We were not sure if it was a large bruising or internal bleeding. When we went to reception to ask for help, none was forthcoming. Medic was not available at the lodge or near by, there was no offer to drive us to closest medical facility. They did not even have a cold pack in the medkit ( that kit had less supplies than what we had with us). The lady at the reception could care less. On arrival at the lodge we were given a briefing on the lodge and its facilities. There are two blocks of rooms the main area incorporates the dinning room and has a very spacious lounge area, the second block on the other side of the compound has a smaller lounge area but is nearer the air-condition gym and the small pool. We were allocated Room 16 in this block. The room had a queen sized bed, good quality air conditioning, a safe, a reasonable shower, toiletries were provided as was a hairdryer. Two flasks of drinking water were also provided and topped up each day. There was also a small patio area with chairs and a table. The meals were all served buffet style, breakfast had all the usual options, with eggs however you wanted them. Lunch and dinner was also a culinary experience with well known dishes and many Brazilian dishes to try. We had one breakfast outside after a game drive and two evening meals, one of which was a Brazilian BBQ also outside after a game drive. The main event at the lodge are the game drives which occur early morning and late afternoon and last for around 3 hours. After a quick coffee and biscuit, cake or fruit we were off. Our game drives were guided by Natalia who was so passionate about the animals, pointing out animals, birds, (of which there are hundreds of different varieties), reptiles and the flora and fauna at every turn. Clearly most people are here to see the Jaguars, and we were not disappointed seeing two on our first game drive. On the evening game drive as night fell, Natalia would climb onto a seat at the very front of the 4x4 and with a spotlight in hand would lookout for the nocturnal wildlife for us to see. What I hadn't appreciated was how Caiman had started and how incredible it is as a pioneer of ecotourism. Plus how vast it is in terms of being home to so many species of wildlife including the hyacinth macaw, capybara, giant anteaters and the tapir. We also hadn't anticipated eating such amazing food at Casa Caiman, carefully crafted to feature typical Brazilian dishes served with a voiceover from the team. We ventured out with the dedicated guides with both the Oncafari and the Caiman teams on driving safaris. Both teams were well-informed, passionate and excellent, and within a very short space of time we had close-up viewings of jaguars, capybara, giant anteaters, tapirs, hyacinth macaw and the toco toucan, and so much more. On our last evening safari as the light was starting to fade and I thought our trip had been absolutely everything we could have wished for, our guide spotted Itapira swimming. Itapira is the jaguar whose paws were burnt during the extensive 2024 fires; she was rescued and subsequently recovered, so it was special moment. Then as the sun set and it was dark, and we assumed sightings were over, our guide spotted an unknown female jaguar and her four month old cub wandering down the track in front of us. A very special moment at a very special place - Caiman Pantanal.
Caiman Lodge has been on our list for a decade. We finally decided to pull the trigger and it couldn't have been any better. We came for the Jaguars and saw our first within 5 minutes of arriving for our first game drive. We had Laura and Gabriel as our guides and they were extremely knowledgeable and tons of fun! All in all, over 4 days we ID'd 130 bird species, caiman, agouti, crab-eating fox, marsh deer, pampas deer, giant anteater, ocelot, tapir, capybara (wife's fav) and of course, Jaguars (7 total). The food is different every day and there are tons of options. The fresh fruit, juice and beef were highlights for me. I would highly recommend coming here if you are an animal lover. We decided on this instead of the Porto Joffre area so we could be more isolated in our experiences with the Jaguars and it definitely was. What you see is obviously luck to some degree. We heard people in other cars who saw up to 12 different Jaguars, one saw a Jaguarundi and other things. If you understand wildlife, you get it. We chose to do the Oncafari one day to prioritize Jaguars. We only saw 3 over the entire day (one was stalking cattle at night), but it was the hottest day we were there. The Oncafari group the next day saw 8, so you just never know. The food is superb, as is the service. The rooms are super comfortable, even luxurious. This was the only place we stayed in the Pantanal that was on par with some wildlife lodges in Africa. Most places in the region are cattle operations with a tourist lodge on the side; the is the opposite. It is a wildlife conservation area that has some leases for cattle ranching. The focus on conservation sets this place apart, not just the high quality of service and food. The sightings of jaguars were wonderful, with only a few other vehicles at most (and often none). Other wildlife sightings were fantastic as well, and far exceeded our expectations. We could have happily stayed additional nights. A few items of note - they have a couple of outdoor dining experiences. One was LOVELY and quiet; the other less enjoyable due to some live music that, in our view, detracted from the focus on nature (especially as there was a jaguar nearby - far more interesting!). If anything could be improved, it would be the safari vehicles, which oddly have a seat mounted up front for night drives and which are not staggered, so all the seats are the same height, making it very hard to get good viewing spots and take photos, especially for anyone in the back or a middle seat. That was the only drawback, however, and we would not hesitate to return and to recommend this place. Stay here at the end of your trip and not the start so you avoid disappointment in everything that comes after.
Caiman Pantanal was such an experience to have, since the moment we stepped into it till the end we enjoyed every second. Our bedroom was large and spacious, the bed very comfortable and the bedding of the highest quality.Everything about our bedroom was explained on arrival - there were two thermos flasks which were re-filled every day with filtered water. There were two portable flasks (one each) which were a gift to us, which we used all the time on holiday, a branded material shoulder bag each which were also a gift to us, together with two beautifully carved small wooden birds (also a gift to take home as a memory) which had been placed either side of the bed.We went out early each morning in the dark for a safari and came back for breakfast and went out late afternoon in the warmth of the day with a breeze from the open air safari vehicles, coming back when it was dark for an evening meal. Lunch was also provided, together with hot drinks, fresh juice and soft drinks. Chargeable wine, spirits and cocktails are also served. All the meals are served in a dining room, the food is waiting for you to make your own selection and at every meal a member of staff explained what every food item was - as a person who is not particularly adventurous with food I don't recognise, I found this very helpful and enabled me to eat different foods! One evening after our safari there was a bbq which was held into an open, hacienda type building which had been set up for us, the tables looked beautiful. Meats were being cooked on an open fire and there was local musical entertainment all evening. The staff brought over our different wine bottles from the main Casa for our table, there was a welcome drink and hot flannels to wipe our face and hands. The evening was magical and when we were ready to go back, one of the safari jeeps took us on the short journey back to the main Casa Caiman lodge. The area is a wetland area and very hot too when we visited in March, so a high factor sun cream and a really good mosquito spray is absolutely necessary. Long leg trousers with a cuff on the bottom of the leg for the safari and consider yourself fortunate if you manage not to get bitten (it goes with the territory I think).
Tolle Lodge mitten im Nichts 🤩 sehr freundliches Personal, top essen und sehr schöne Zimmer. The birdlife and wildlife is fantastic (we were particularly focused on birds - and there were good opportunities in the towers and in bird hides for particular species). Spending time on the river itself was fantastic, seeing many things come to the waters edge, as well as specific hikes and activities. The lodge itself was really impressive - all meals, the layout of it and the standard. We stayed in a Bungalow and it was incredible. Probably the best type of rainforest lodge we have stayed in before. Expect early starts, chilly mornings (it was winter when we were there) and a few hours in the jeep. The Oncafari day with the conservation team was excellent, and it is great to learn about the emphasis on ensuring the wildlife lives in harmony with ranchers.
We saw a vast array of animals - Jaguars, a Maned Wolf (rare apparently here), Giant Anteater, birds, caiman and lots more. Our family of four - parents and two adult children - spent some time here over Christmas and all had a fabulous time. It was quite hot during our stay, so we quickly learned to cool off with multiple swims, showers and fruit juices at the bar each day. Our guide for the week, Rafa, and the boatman, Leandro, were fabulous, showing us way more wildlife than we ever thought possible. By the end we had more than 200 birds on our lists, together with multiple mammals, spiders, and frogs. The food at the restaurant was fresh tasting and delicious, much of it with Brazilian flavors and produce from their gardens. All in all, Cristalino was the perfect choice for us. The only downside was that our flight home from Alta Floresta was cancelled at the last minute due to weather. Our daughter texted the concierge (even though of course we had checked out). Lucas joined us after a few minutes, negotiated with the airline staff (who spoke limited English) and stayed with us until we had been rebooked. This all took several hours (since everyone else was rebooking as well!). He wouldn’t leave until we completely taken care of - way above and beyond in my view. The absence of air conditioning in the rooms is explained by environmental reasons, so we put up with the heat in the rooms because the coherence of the project requires it. As I wrote in the review paperwork they ask you to fill out before leaving, they have thought of every detail (kind of like Disneyland).

Getting there requires flying in to Alta Floresta airport, approx 45 min van ride, and approx 25 min boat ride. The buildings, common areas, and rooms were re-done within the past 15 years or so (I don't recall the exact years). But we met the daughter of the owner who is the architect. My husband is a general contractor and they had much to discuss about the type of wood used, etc. The bottom line...it's gorgeous.

Since I could write a lot about this place, I'm going to go to bullets for brevity:

- Rooms are spacious with every detail thought out for clothes storage. Two showers, one inside and one outside (which we used often due to the heat). No AC but we were pleasantly surprised at the effectiveness of the fan and slept well every night.

- We are not "birders" in the true sense, but if you are, you'll love this place. From the macaws nesting on the property trees, to the hundreds of birds you can see on hikes and boat trips, you'll be amazed. There were several guests who got to see the Harpe Eagle (if you don't know what that is, please look it up...it's stunning).

- The employees are super sweet and gracious. Whatever you need, they will deliver. We tipped several individuals generously (like the breakfast cook, bartender, and waiter) who were so thoughtful and just great people.

- The amount and deliciousness of the food is incredible. And often local dishes and flavors are served. One night they grilled fresh-caught local fish in the common area fire pit. I have never tasted fish that good in my life (we live in California and eat fish regularly).

The only suggestion I had in my feedback was the the meals off the menu (when buffet isn't available) contain too much salt. We are so glad we finally made it because if we had not, we would have missed experiencing this beautiful, special place that even National Geographic touts as a lodge that must be visited.

Most important, our guide Jessica O. was remarkable. We have been to many places in the world to experience the beauty of nature and have met many wonderful people who have been in charge of teaching us about the cool plants, animals and features of these places. But Jessica (a trained scientist) took this to another level, with both her knowledge of the flora/fauna of Brazil in general and, more importantly, her passion for Brazil’s nature. If there were more smart, motivated and right-minded young people like Jessica, the world would be a brilliant place.

For the average Joe visitor (like us!), you must be open to appreciating the “small” things — such as hundreds of purple martins flocking over the river, watching the sunrise from the observation tower as the “flying mist” clears from the rainforest, beautiful butterflies and other fascinating insects, eating the most amazing raw Brazil nuts that will ruin your pleasure for any other nuts forever, the absolutely most mind-blowing plants and trees — because you are probably not going to see the large rainforest mammals. They are elusive and realistically difficult to see no matter where you go in the Amazon.

The beauty of this place also lies in its ethos of conservation and sustainability. We stayed in two junior bungalows and it was a heartwarming sight to behold the banana trees and heliconias in the yard that would be treating the waste from the bungalows. Although it was probably not awesome for the resort staff to find animals eating the “wastewater treatment facilities”, it was still wonderful for us to see the monkeys and capybaras right in the yard, drawn to the bananas and other edibles from the system. In fact, to see amazing creatures and beautiful birds (all manner of macaws), it really was not necessary to stray too far from the lodge itself!

Rounding out the experience for us were several staff members who were incredibly helpful, warm, and willing to help us with whatever we needed. First: kitchen staff and Joao and Eduardo at the bar/dining area: wow. The food created by the staff and on offer at each meal was good, plentiful and provided something for everyone in our group (including a couple vegetarians). Bar service by Joao was beyond reproach: drinks were made with fresh, natural ingredients and were delicious. The acai ice cream treat (ask for it Brazilian style)?? Good lord: too delectable for mere words.

Edsel, our boatman, always greeted us with a smile and is single-handedly responsible for making sure we never truly enjoy another regular ol’ nut as long as we live. Once he witnessed our passion for the taste of the raw Brazil nut, he made sure that we got some on each outing in the boat. We will love him forever for it.

It is a difficult journey to get here, for sure, but worth it. Our very circuitous route (we were traveling from Central America and not the US to get to the Cristalino) necessitated that one leg of the journey was on the Brazilian budget airline Gol.
